Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Funny enough, Dr. Lavery sort of fell into dentistry as a career. Back in his college days, it was very difficult to get into medical or dental schools, and more students that started out pre-med/dental never even got to the point of applying. Meanwhile, he was a chemistry major and didn’t think of himself as pre-med/dental, but he started to consider the possibility when he did extremely well in his classes. Plus, his older brother always talked about wanting to become a physician, and Dr. Lavery knew on some level that he had to do something different. Ultimately, he applied to dental school in his junior year and got in early, attending the same school as his brother. All these years later, and he truly can’t imagine doing anything else.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After attending Rutgers College, Dr. Lavery completed his dental training at the New Jersey Dental School (now called Rutgers School of Dental Medicine). Right after graduation, he worked for a few years in public health service in Patterson and then moved to the Mercer County, Princeton area, where he bought a practice – and the rest is history.
Today, Dr. Lavery has well over a thousand hours of continuing education under his belt. In the last few years, he’s focused a lot on dental implants (both placement and restoration). To date, he has placed hundreds of implants. He also emphasizes non-surgical periodontal (gum disease) treatment whenever possible. The connection between inflammation and medical diseases is more important than ever!
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Lavery and his wife have been married for 40 years. He has four adult children – two daughters and two sons – and four wonderful grandchildren. Away from the dental office, his biggest passion is golf! It helps him relax and put his other worries to the side. During the season, he tries to go to the course once or twice a week. He also enjoys other outside activities like biking, kayaking, swimming, running, and skiing. One day, he hopes to expose his grandkids to how fun the slopes can be!
